We want to share some Good News! Medicare is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. Through this initiative the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will prevent fraud, fight identity theft CMS will issue new Medicare cards with a new unique, randomly-assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to replace the existing Social Security Number. They have started mailing new cards to people with Medicare benefits in April 2018. All Medicare cards will be replaced by April 2019.
5 Things to Know
- Your new card will automatically come to you. You don’t need to do anything as long as your address is up to date. If you need to update your address, visit your My Social Security account.- Opens in a new tab
- If you have not received your card and would like to receive an email when the card is in the mail, please click on this link: https://www.medicare.gov/newcard/
- Once you get your new Medicare card, destroy your old Medicare card and start using your new card right away.
- Your new Medicare Number is a unique combination of numbers and letters. Your new number uses numbers 0 thru 9. The letters S, L, O, I, B, and Z are never used
